Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

It’s a great welcome back to see so many fabulous graduates. Congratulations to all of our fine students and I invite you to celebrate with them and their families tomorrow at 10am in the foyer of the new building. A very large part of our success as a school is down to the outstanding students we train and the effort they put into their work.

I trust everyone had a safe and refreshing break – I certainly did and am looking forward to the International Year of Quantum. My thanks to Profs Jodie Bradby (MP), Ben Buchler (QST) and Patrick Kluth (MP) for acting while I was off enjoying myself.

One of my (many) guilty pleasures is to reflect on how well our school competes on the global stage from outstanding discovery science through to transformational industry partners. Below are two things that have been front of mind this year already, and like our students, should cause us all to smile and feel part of our enduring success. Below are some photos from the Australian launch of the Rio Tinto Centre for Future Materials last Thursday. Our VC and Rio Tinto Chief Innovation Officer were both thrilled to jointly announce the 10 year partnership with Imperial College, Berkeley, UBC and Witwatersrand. I would like to give my sincere thanks to Dr Victor Pantano (OreAI, MP) for his stewardship and amazing coordination on this global partnership. One of the things that made me happiest was to see representatives from every corner of ANU join together in our auditorium to celebrate this unique humanities-meets-STEM initiative. And, the other guilty pleasure was to collate our discipline performance in the QS and Shanghai rankings (see here) over the past 5 years among other similar schools. For those who think about these things, this more than highlights our outstanding national discipline leadership. I feel it draws a spotlight on how we engage inclusively and extensively with a diversity of collaborators across the country and the world. This culture doesn’t happen overnight and it we should all recognise the long term value of the research done in Physics.

Best,
Tim

Research Highlighted In The Nature Index Journal

Congratulations to Rickson Wielian and Ivan Toftul (DMP), who suggested a new approach to understand topological properties of physical systems using the transfer matrix, that proves to be versatile tool in analysing topological invariants and provides valuable insights into topological edge states. The paper originated from Rickson’s PhB project, and it has been highlighted by Physical Review B, one of a few APS journals listed in the Nature Index
