Director's Message

New Year: Welcome to 2025!

I trust everyone has either enjoyed or is still enjoying a well-deserved break as we enter the new year. Whether you're already back at your desk or still enjoying the holidays, I hope you're feeling refreshed and ready for what promises to be another big year.

I'm delighted to share that Professor Greg Lane has been appointed as the new Head of the Department of Nuclear Physics and Accelerator Applications. I also want to take this opportunity to thank Professor Andrew Stuchbery for his leadership of the department. Under Andrew's guidance through times of much change, the department has really gone from strength to strength. This success has been built on the foundation of teamwork across the entire department, and I am confident NPAA is in safe hands with Greg as the new ‘strong force’ binding the dept together!

For those of you gradually returning to campus over the coming days, welcome back! And for those still enjoying some time off, we look forward to seeing you soon.

Here's to a productive 2025!

Best regards,
Jodie
(Acting Director)

We're Going On A Beetle Hunt

When scientists observed snow gums dying in huge numbers, they immediately suspected a beetle might be the culprit.

The next step seemed easy: catch some beetles.

But this is a story about what it’s like to tackle an entirely new problem, so nothing is easy.

Not even catching some beetles.

Megavolts Ep 11: Testing Silicon Chips For Space

Up above the protection of the earth's atmosphere and magnetic field, satellites face a lot of radiation in space. A single cosmic ray hitting a satellite's electronics can wreak havoc on an entire multi-million dollar space mission, so it's crucial to design and test radiation hardened electronics for spacecraft.
