Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

I hope you found a chance to relax over the weekend.

Last Thursday, CSIRO ran the first Australian Quantum Communications Forum and ANU featured very richly throughout the day-long program. Above, A/Prof Matt Sellars (QST) delivering a great talk within which he listed the key Australian technologies that could well enable a world-wide quantum optical network. His concluding remark was a clarion call to arms for an audience that spanned industry, government and the research sector.

I’m pleased to congratulate Dr Matthew Parry (EME), who has just been awarded the ECR International Travel Award from the DVC(RI), Prof Lachlan Blackhall.

There really are a truck load of funds and awards to consider at the moment, please scan below, and in addition;

You will have seen that Academic Board elections are on soon. With an information session this afternoon at 4pm (Zoom). I can high recommend these university service roles, especially during a change in leadership.

I hope you have had a chance to progress your PDR discussions with your supervisor.

Finally, a colourful image from “Science Meets Parliament” in the Great Hall last Wednesday. Prof Cathy Foley delivered one of her last speeches as Chief Scientist. EMCRs are encouraged to think about engaging in this annual opportunity to meet politicians. Australia is one of the few countries to host an event like this and being in Canberra we are well placed to get engaged. Speak to your Heads if you’re interested.

Have a great week,
Tim
