Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Please join me and congratulate Professor Mahananda Dasgupta (Director HIAF/NPAA) on being appointed to the prestigious National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) for a three-year term. The council is Chaired by the Prime Minister, the Minister for Science serves as deputy chair and the Chief Scientist as the executive officer. This provides the preeminent forum for scientific and technological advice for government policy and priorities. I am so pleased to see a colleague of Nanda’s experience and perspective on the NSTC.

Last week we hosted representatives from the Leibniz Association visiting colleagues from across ANU with focussed workshops on AI, non-linear physics, astrophysics, metasurfaces, climate change and health (above, credit Kannika Afonso). The German delegation enjoyed tours of ANFF/TMOS and Heavy Ion Accelerator facilities. My thanks to all the staff from the ANU International Office for arranging a great couple of days.

On Wednesday and Thursday this week the AFP will be doing some situational training for their officers in the foyer and auditorium areas. They will not be entering the office or lab areas and my email this morning contains specific details. I’m very pleased to host the AFP and in the next few months ACT Emergency Services will also be using our unique facilities to enhance their advanced rescue techniques. My thanks to ANU Security for arranging these opportunities.

Have a great week,
Tim
