Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
After a restful break I’m feeling pretty ready for 2024, especially so after some rousing pub rock from OCDC from some of our multi-talented staff last Saturday at Smith’s Alternative Bookshop. In front, Jason Judd (Questacon) lead guitar, from the left John Close (QST) vocals, Phil Dooley (RSPhys) keyboard/guitar, Andrew Kiss (RSES) bass and Patrick Kluth (MP) on drums. It was a truly magnificent set, the crowd went wild and all for a worthy cause, the childrens charity Variety. I still have my favourite Angel's song in my head.

ANU OPEN DAY – Sat 16th March, 9am – 3pm
We are seeking volunteers please to help out at the Physics booth.
It would be great to have a mix of academic staff and students to provide academic advice, share student experiences and promote physics!
If you have a demonstration/promotional material/fun ideas to attract students, please let me know as soon as possible.
Volunteers are required to wear ANU t-shirts, one will be provided if you do not have one. (Please let me know your size, if required)
All day volunteers will be provided with a lunch voucher.

Robert And Helen Crompton Award 2024 - Call For Applications
We are seeking applications for the Robert and Helen Crompton Award, valued up to $15,000.
This generous award is funded by The Robert and Helen Crompton Endowment Fund. Emeritus Professor Robert Crompton, an ANU physicist for over 40 years, and his wife Helen established this Endowment to provide support for outstanding physics students. It is the intention of the Research School and the Crompton family that the fund is used to enhance career opportunities and experience of students.
This generous award enables RSPhys HDR students to undertake part of the research program overseas or make a collaborative visit to an overseas institution, for 3 to 6 months.
Please refer to the Conditions of Award for eligibility details. Nominations may be made by the students, supervisors or Heads of Departments.

O-Week/International Day of Women and Girls in Science |

February 11 is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. To celebrate this day, and the start of O-Week, come and meet some of our amazing women scientists, as well as staff from the College of Science and the College of Engineering, Computing & Cybernetics working on Gender Equity, plus representatives of staff and student groups with a GE focus (including Fifty50, Women* in Physics, Astro and Engineering, Rladies, and the Gender Institute).
There will be no PowerPoint and no speeches, just mingling and chatting with people who fundamentally think that the World will be much better once Science achieves Gender Equality.
Date and Time: Monday 12 February 2-4pm.

Teaching Opportunity - Get Involved And Be An
We are seeking expressions of interest for the role of "Academic of the Week" for our foundational first-year course, PHYS1101. This involves leading one (or two!) labs, where you will introduce students to the practical aspects of physics, contextualize the lab's relevance, and explain foundational concepts. The commitment includes a brief talk at the beginning of the lab and staying on for the first 30 to 60 minutes of each session, with the option to remain throughout the full 3-hour duration. Labs are generally scheduled across Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings, with an additional afternoon session so the week you would be scheduled will be quite busy! No grading responsibilities are involved. This role offers a wonderful chance to engage with our undergraduate students and experience teaching at ANU firsthand. For the students they get to meet additional academics for undergrad student research project opportunities and to hear about the cool stuff they do as physicists at ANU. 🙂 Previous participants include Tim Senden, Maryna Bilokur, Kasmir Gregory, Andrey Sukhorukov, and Jodie Bradby. If you are interested or have further questions, please contact Jodie Bradby as soon as possible. We are especially seeking people with python experience. 2024-2025 Oxford PhD Exchange (ANU to Oxford University) – Applications Open
The Oxford PhD Exchange is a graduate candidate exchange program between Oxford University and the ANU. The exchange aims to enable excellent PhD scholars to enrich their research in an international setting.
The 2024-2025 round of the Oxford PhD Exchange (ANU to Oxford University) is a tremendous opportunity for ANU Higher Degree Research (HDR) candidates to engage in independent research at Oxford University, audit classes, attend workshops and, network with academics working in their field. This opportunity is open to all disciplines.
Applicants can apply for an exchange period of one academic year, or one or two academic terms.
