Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

I don’t need to tell anyone that the School has been a very busy place over the past few weeks. Firstly some great news for the two NCRIS programs hosted in our school. The new NCRIS funding has brought in a significant increase to the Heavy Ion Accelerator capability, $13.49M over the next four years, in addition to the $9.64M previously-announced baseline funding until June 30 2028, for accelerator operations at the two nodes at the ANU and one node at the University of Melbourne. The ACT node of ANFF received almost $3M for local equipment as part of the nation-wide investment of $37M. It’s great to see support of our major facilities.

The KOALA meeting was a huge success and my thanks to the organising committee, Neuton Li, Sarah Dean, Joshua Jordaan, Marcus Cai, Jack Lang, Shridhar Manjunath, Fedor Kovalev and Robin Hu for the supreme efforts. And, Ivan Toftul for some amazing photography. The student-led conference also featured an industry night. Below, Mahasen Sooriyabandara (Thaum) and Kyle Hardman (Nomad Atomics) are seen sharing their experiences in translating their Physics training into commercial reality. It was a great night and I’m grateful to the eight companies who shared their insights.

Last week I had the pleasure of presenting the team jackets to the Australian Junior Science Olympiads team. Below Dr Kathryn White, (Program Leader) departed last week for Thailand with her team of six students and Deputy, Suren Mendis (meriSTEM). I wish them all the very best.

The ANZCOP-AIP meeting kicked off brilliantly yesterday. I’ve included some early photos, firstly of the student warm-up with Dr Phil Dooley on Sunday (yes, he’s on the table), then Aunty Violet a Ngunnawal Elder welcomes all delegates to Country, followed by Prof Brian Schmidt in one of his last official duties as VC and rounding off a busy day, Dr Tom McGoram introduces Dr Ed Simpson who delivered a fabulous public lecture, After Oppenheimer.

By all reports our teams in Shandong are going well. Prof Lan Fu (Head, EME) sent through some happy snaps including a beautiful snow scene.

Have a great week,
Tim

End Of Year Finance Cut Offs

As we approach the year-end, just a friendly reminder to promptly process your Purchase Card Concur reports.

It is important to note that items purchased through an ANU purchase card are not encumbered to a General Ledger Code (GLC)/Financial budget until the claim is processed and approved via CONCUR.

To ensure accurate budget reflections for the current year, please be mindful that all transaction approvals must be completed by the 22nd of December 2023. Transactions processed after the University's year-end closure will be accounted for in the 2024 budget.

Your timely attention to this matter is greatly appreciated. Should you have any questions or require assistance, please refer to the ANU Purchase card Guidelines and procedures or contact the Purchasing Team.
