Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

It is with enormous pleasure to congratulate Distinguished Professor Chennupati Jagadish on his election as foreign member to the Chinese Academy of Science. This is a very rare privilege and to date only one other Australian has been awarded this high honour.

This week Clarivate released their 2023 High Cited awards. For the seventh year running, Distinguished Professor Yuri Kivshar has made it to the list for Physics. Seven years is amazing! He is the only one of two Australian physicists this year, the other is a familiar colleague, Professor Andrey Miroshnichenko (UNSW). And, Professor Dragomir Neshev has also earned this distinction for the third year running in the category of Cross-Field. HiCi awards go to less than 1 in 1000 researchers. To win them in successive years is truly remarkable and demonstrates significant impact.

My warmest congratulations to our all colleagues above, please pass on yours when you see them next.

We’re in the final countdown for the KOALA 2023, a student conference on optics, atoms and laser applications. All students in RSPhys are very welcome to attend the Industry networking event on Wednesday 29th Nov from 6:00 pm - 7:45 pm. Register here.

Above, some of our amazing students (Phoebe, Charlie, Sam and Sophie) were so inspired by their quantum field theory course they baked two Compton scattering cakes, one with the direct term and one with the exchange term. I never thought Feynman diagrams as delicious, but there you go.

I'll have a message from our teams at Shandong for next week. Wishing them all the best.

Have a good weekend,
Tim

Prof Yuri Kivshar (FTP) and Dr Sergey Kruk (FTP) who were both successful in winning a grant of the Australia Germany Joint Research Cooperation Scheme.

They were awarded AUD $25k each across two years to build and support collaborations with groups in Germany.

It was lovely to celebrate the Dept of Electronic Materials Engineering (EME) turning 35 years old.

EME started in 1988 and has gone from strength to strength, producing excellent PhD students and outstanding researchers.

Great to see so many current and past staff and students joining the celebration.

Lan Fu the current Head gave a short speech before the history was provided by the EME foundation Head, Jim Williams.
