Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
Many of you will know that the J.G. Crawford Prize is the very highest form of recognition of excellence in postgraduate studies at the ANU. It is a very precious accolade not only for the student, but also a source of pride for the supervisor and I feel the School as well.
It is truly a great pleasure to congratulate, Dr Kirill Koshelev (NLPC/FTP) on being awarded a 2022 J.G. Crawford prize for best thesis in the Science, Medicine and Engineering category. His remarkable thesis entitled, “Advanced trapping of light in resonant dielectric metastructures for nonlinear optics” has already been the source of several highly cited papers.
It is an equal pleasure to congratulate Dr Aleese Barron (now in MP) who undertook her seminal work, “Archaeobotanical applications of microCT imaging” using the X-ray scanning facilities in CTLab. Based in the School of Archaeology and Anthropology, CASS, Aleese employed Computed Tomography to develop new insights into how prehistoric crops were adapted and would become agents for technological and social change. Below, supervisor Prof Tim Denham is seen with Aleese (Image credit: Evana Ho / ANU), from a recent article about her work.
In their respective fields both Kirill and Aleese have defined new landmarks. Please congratulate them when you see them next.
At 3pm on Wednesday Prof Chris Barty, at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for 17 years leading programs including the National Ignition Facility and more recently the development of laser-Compton X-ray sources. A team from CoS and CHM are currently evaluating if the ANU might host one of these amazing sources. Come and hear first-hand why these sources promise a new horizon for X-ray imaging and analysis across many domains. Please note that this seminar will be in-person only and there will be ample time for questions.
The School Executive will meet on Thursday morning. I invite you to consider topics for your representatives to table. Please speak with them, or better still become a member of a representative group. Speak to your Head of Department for details.
On Monday, I’m in Stawell representing the ANU on the company board that will manage the underground physics laboratory 1km beneath the wonderful landscape pictured below from Budja Budja (Halls Gap). Gorgeous country.
Have a great week, Tim |

Bunji Mentoring Scheme For HDR Students In Physics At ANU
When new HDR students arrive at our School they have a lot to take in, especially if they are new to Canberra or Australia. In order to help them settle in, we plan to instigate a Bunji* Mentoring program, whereby more experienced HDR students in the School are teamed up with new arrivals to help them get settled and to share some of their acquired wisdom as to how to navigate the School, the ANU and Canberra. How, when and how often you meet with your charge will be up to the pair of you, though we will organise regular events for Bunji and Mentors.
If you are interested in becoming a Bunji Mentor please email Physics HDR Student Admin. If you need more information then contact Vince Craig. » read more

Join us for a (Caffeinated) Community Event at MSI |
|
On Tuesday 12 September, MSI will host a community event for all students, professional staff, and academic staff in the College of Science. The goal is to get to know each other. The mean to do that is, obviously, coffee!
