Sorry, another late EH from me this week. I'll try and pick up my game for next week!

The top pic says it all, a wonderful winter graduation to celebrate with our colleagues. My congratulations to all our graduates;

Allina Nadzri (PhD, Department of Materials Physics)
Wei Wen Wong (PhD, Department of Electronic Materials Engineering)
Lauren Bezzina (PhD, Department of Nuclear Physics and Accelerator Applications)
Ka Po Tee (PhD, Department of Materials Physics)
Jacob Buete (PhD, Department of Nuclear Physics and Accelerator Applications)
Hao Jeng (PhD, Department of Quantum Science and Technology)
Dige Wang (PhD, Department of Quantum Science and Technology)
Xilin Lu (PhD, Department of Fundamental and Theoretical Physics)
Patrick McGlynn (PhD, Department of Fundamental and Theoretical Physics)
Huma Latif (PhD, Department of Quantum Science and Technology)
Sonachand Adhikari (PhD, Department of Electronic Materials Engineering)
Tianyue Ellen Zheng (Honours)
Jack Woodside (Honours)
Thomas Hort (Honours)
Xiaotian Liu (Master of Science (Advanced) in Precision Instrumentation and Measurement)
Ran Ji (Master of Science in Theoretical Physics)
Simone Antich (Master of Energy Change (Advanced))
Mrunmayi Sudhakar Deshpande (Master of Science in Precision Instrumentation and Measurement)
Jackson Hickman (Graduate Certificate of Nuclear Technology Regulation)

Two important surveys to consider;

  1. CSIRO are collecting information about Quantum Communications research in Australia. Closes 25 Aug.
  2. $500k of ANU Teaching grants.  If you’re interested do this survey by Tuesday 25thJuly.

Please note the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator workshop on Thursday (see below).

Dept Heads will be collecting ideas around reducing our School carbon footprint. I’ve heard some great ideas including counting some of our green research in hydrogen.

Cheers,
Tim

Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator – Information Sessions

Defences’ new Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator was recently launched on 1 July 2023.

The Defence Accelerator or ASCA, signals a new approach to Defence innovation. ASCA will take a strategically directed, mission based approach to accelerate delivery of asymmetric capability that solves Defence’s highest priorities.

The Interim Head of ASCA, Professor Emily Hilder, is hosting two Q&A sessions, where you can hear more about this exciting new program and how you can engage with us. *Defence employees will not be able to virtually attend on the Defence network and will need to access from a personal device.*

  • Register Here – Monday, 17 July 2023 11:30am – 12:30pm AEST

Johnson & Johnson Women in STEM²D Scholars Program

Johnson & Johnson WiSTEM2D Scholars Award is an award to support women pursuing research in STEM2D (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Manufacturing & Design). WiSTEM2D Scholars Award aims to fuel the development of female STEM2D leaders and feed the STEM2D talent pipeline by awarding and sponsoring women at critical points in their research careers, in each of the STEM2D disciplines.

This opens on the 22nd of August and closes on the 30th of September and is worth USD$150,000 over 3 years. The country and nationality of the researcher is unlimited. You must be an assistant female professor or global equivalent faculty position at the time of application.

HIAF Open Day - Sat 19 August

The Heavy ion accelerator facilities (HIAF) at ANU it's celebrates 50th anniversary this year. The facility is part of the national infrastructure and serves the nation and beyond. As part of National Science Week, on Sat 19 August HIAF will provide a rare opportunity to members of the public, school students and prospective ANU students to build an understanding of how an ion accelerator works, take a tour of the accelerator facilities, and get involved in a range of hands-on science demonstrations including exploring natural radioactivity.

There are many research fields where accelerators are used, including in climate change, quantum computing, nuclear medicine, fundamental physics, exploding stars and our understanding of the nature of the universe. The facility at the ANU is Australia's most powerful ion accelerator and one of the three most powerful of its type in the world.

This Open Day may be of a particular interest for the high school teachers and students, as it has been over 10 years since the facility opened its doors to public last time.

As places are limited, visitors need to book a free ticket via Eventbrite.
