Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

My apologies for the very late edition this week.

Across the College of Science, almost 100 Vidya and Chennupati Jagadish Scholars and Future Research Talent Scholars have been enjoying a mix of culture and research. From all accounts, the students have had a great time and were recently treated to a reception at the Indian High Commission (images: Nic Vevers ANU) and an awards ceremony at the Shine Dome. Above, Professors Nanda Dasgupta (NPAA) and Kiaran Kirk (Dean), and Jay Poria prepare for the reception with the India High Commissioner, Ambassador Manpreet Vohra. For many this is their final few weeks. My sincere thanks to all their supervisors over the past few months. Speaking to the students I know they have had a fantastic time. My special thanks to the admin team for all their great work getting them here (Julie Arnold, Petra Rickman, Linda Barbour, Nikki Azzopardi and Sonia Padrun), and of course our wonderful CoS International Relations and Partnerships team; Jay Poria, Arthur Xu, Sonya Ku and Sarah Yue.

Below, we farewell Lee Philip from the Facilities team. I’ve had the great pleasure to work with Lee in various roles since he joined the ANU in 2006. In our School he has brought a wonderful set of skills and his indefatigable good humour (always). We wish him and his family all the very best for their sea change in Denmark, WA.

Just a reminder that your supervisor and I need to see travel requests at least two weeks before departure. Also, please check if you need to clear anything with FIAC before you travel. You can book tickets and accommodation through CTM, the corporate travel agent.

Finally, can I ask that you start a discussion at your next Departmental meeting about what we might do to reduce our carbon intensity in the School. I'll ask Heads to report back at the next School Executive in August. At ANU, travel is the big contributor to Scope 1 emissions, accounting for about half, and I would love to hear your thoughts on how we might reduce or offset this impact. To give you an inkling of the scale, we undertake about one international trip each day of the year (somewhere between 2.5 - 3.5 tonnes CO2 per year in total).

Have a good week,
Tim
