Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

With the sad news of Ros Williams’ passing last week many have passed on their condolences. The family has suggested that people might like to donate to the following associations in recognition of the wonderful support they provide to suffers and their families. Motor Neurone Disease New South Wales, FightMND and Motor Neurone Disease Research Australia.  A memorial service is planned for the second half of June.

My congratulations to Dr Nico Francois (DMP) who has won a prestigious Mid-Career Industry Fellowship, one of only two at the ANU. In partnership with Rio Tinto, Nico will be developing new thinking around the processing of iron ore expressly for green steel production.

Please take note of the Ally training this month.

The School Executive will be meeting on Thursday. Speak to your Head or representatives if you have matters to raise.

Above, a pyrocumulus cloud forms during some of the controlled low temperature burning we’ve seen around Canberra bushland these past few months. Taken from the vantage point of our terrace I thought it encapsulates an interesting range of physics. If you have images of School activities during the week please send them to reception.physics@anu.

Have a good week,
Tim

High-harmonic Generation From A Subwavelength Resonator

The emerging field of nonperturbative nanophotonics enables to increase the frequency of light multiple times over in nanostructured solids. This process is known as the generation of high optical harmonics. The field promises new tiny light sources in unconventional spectral regions such as high-frequency light in vacuum-UV and extreme-UV.

Circular Economy Round Table - Call For EoI

Transitioning to a circular economy is of growing interest to governments and industry around Australia. Please join an ANU Circular Economy Round Table to explore how researchers in this field can capitalize on this emerging opportunity. ACT NoWaste and CSIRO have been invited to deliver the Round Table opening remarks that highlight the role for research based solutions in the achievement of their visions. We will then move into an internal discussion that will facilitate informal conversations with and between researchers about the value they would derive from a concerted effort to engage around a circular economy theme. The Round Table will be preceded by refreshments and the opportunity to network with colleagues.

The event will be held at the aMBUSH Gallery on 5 June 2023.
