Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
Hope you had a nice weekend and the transition Eastern Standard Time went smoothly.
Some of the senior HDR students in NPAA, notably Lauren Bezzina, Patrick McGlynn, Ben Swinton-Bland and Lachlan McKie, hosted a student led exposé of their Departments research activities last week. Combining Honours and PhD students, fourteen attendees across the Nuclear Reactions, Nuclear Structure, Dark Matter, Positron and Theory groups participated in tours of each other's lab spaces, entertained with informal student talks (no slides - talking and a whiteboard marker only!) and social lunch afterwards. I’ve heard glowing reports from the day, motivated in part by a keen willingness to shake away the remoteness the past few years have brought. For me, the elegance of this program is that it is student led and I’m hoping it might act as a template for other Departments, for the School as a whole and who knows, maybe across Schools. I would be very pleased to offer assistance with catering if other groups were keen to follow the NPAA example. Photos from the day above and below. Seen above is Honours student, Martha Reece, explaining the CAESAR detector array, a collection of high-purity Germanium detectors used to measure gamma rays from excited nuclei, providing information on the energy level structure of a nucleus, and also information about the shape of the nucleus (and so much more!). The April School Executive meeting will be held on Thursday morning. Please speak to your Heads or other representatives if you have matters you’d like to raise.
Have a good week, Tim |
