Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Over the past few days I have received some lovely remembrances of Andrew Papworth’s contributions. Andrew encapsulated much of his philosophy in his book, “The art of Experimental Physics”, which he worked on up until his death and we are looking to publish. This week’s image takes us back to the time of the Faculties (1990), back when quantum squeezing was just being accomplished and when National Youth Science Forum, Questacon, Australian Science Olympiads Book time were all in their formative years. Standing with many familiar friends and colleagues, Andrew can be seen second on the left, second row standing with his arms folded (image credit: Hans Bachor).

My congratulations to Chief Investigators of the recently awarded $1M Collaborative Research Project under the Australia-India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF) for “Quantum-enhanced atomic gravimetry for improved sensing capabilities”. Our ANU colleagues, Simon Haine, Stuart Szigeti, John Close and Joe Hope are joined by Prof Matthew Davis at UQ and Prof Sebastian Wüster at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal.

Also, my congratulations to Prof Sean Smith, Director of the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) and affiliated with Department of Material Physics, who has been part of a massive $185M Modern Manufacturing Initiative grant awarded late last week. The private-public partnership aims to employ advanced computation and innovative genomic screening to identify and treat rare cancers; see  “PrOSPeCT:  an Australian Precision Oncology Screening Platform enabling Industry-sponsored Clinical Trials”. This award will bring $12.5M of co-investment into the NCI.

A correction from last week, and my sincerest apologies to our Belarusian colleagues. I used the incorrect name for Belarus and have now amended the archived copy.
