Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

I hope you had a chance to enjoy the peace that has settled over Canberra this weekend. While I’m certain no one is relaxing in this extra busy time, I do hope you are comfortable.

Last Wednesday we heard some wonderful news from the 2021 ARC Future Fellowship round. My congratulations to Drs Marcus Doherty (QST) and Simon Haine (QST). Marcus will redouble his focus on high-performance, room temperature quantum technologies. Simon seeks to improve the theoretical understanding of ultra-precise sensing capabilities needed in inertial sensing and in the search for signatures of quantum gravity, to be hosted at University of Queensland. Their project summaries can be found here. My thanks to everyone who helped all the applicants prepare for this round, as tough as ever. My gratitude also to the CoS Research Office for their great guidance.

This week I will rely on School-wide emails to keep you informed around the shut-down of our facilities (see Friday’s email at 1140).

For this edition of the Event Horizon I'll leave you with some images from the relocation of the Homopolar generator, now 60 metres to the south of where it has sat for the past three decades. Below are some images of the well-orchestrated sequence that required a 200 tonne crane and two low loaders in a double-shuffle over two days. The move had been planned for months and tested the minds and talents of engineers and operators alike. As determined by the crane, the fly wheel weighed in at 26 tonnes, the bearing housing and brace section, came in at 23 tonnes. The top image shows the final position at the entrance of the new building, as a sentinel for audacious science.

Best regards,
Tim
