Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

It is a great delight to inform you that Emeritus Professor Rodney Baxter, FRS, FAA has been awarded the 2021 Henri Poincare Prize at the 2021 International Congress of Mathematical Physics (ICMP) in Geneva, Switzerland last week. This is a major international prize, recognising outstanding contributions in mathematical physics and is awarded every three years at the International Mathematical Physics Congress. The citation reads: "For ground breaking contributions to the study of exactly solvable models in statistical mechanics, which have led to, and continue to inspire, profound developments across a broad spectrum of mathematics and physics." I am very pleased that the laudatio at the opening ceremony was presented by Professor Vladimir Bazhanov (FTP). With thanks to Vladimir further details can be found here. Our congratulations to Rodney!

My congratulations to Professor Lan Fu on being honoured as one of IEEE Photonics Society Distinguished Lecturers for 2021/22. This award will see Lan invited to the many IEEE chapters around the world. Well done, Lan.

Julie Tournet (EME) and Siva Karuturi (EME) are celebrating after acceptance of their review article, “Noble-Metal-Free Multicomponent Nanointegration for Sustainable Energy Conversion” in Chemical Reviews, a journal with a whopping impact factor of 60.6. My congratulations to all the co-authors on their success.

Lastly, but far from least, I share with you an image of our School Electrician, Pat Lang, seen above standing within a maze of beamline and scaffolding in the Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility. A few weeks ago I posted an image of the immense electrical upgrade going on around the accelerator buildings. Pat has been the design lead throughout this project, which will modernise 50 year old cabling and build in capacity for future growth. My thanks to Pat and all the Nuclear Physics technical staff assisting with this complex and mammoth task.

Have a good week,
Tim
