Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

As neighbouring States struggle to contain COVID-19 cases please stay maintain social distancing and use the check-in app whenever changing location outside the School. At present, our COVID-19 Campus Alert Level remains at Blue - Low Risk. Note that the ACT Government has indicated that it will initiate a Territory wide lockdown if a local case is recorded in the ACT due to the highly infectious nature of the Delta variant. If this occurs, we will escalate our Campus Alert System to Orange – High.

Last Tuesday, I had the pleasure of being in a large audience to hear sixteen ACT entrepreneurs present their experiences in developing their overseas markets. The Festival of Ambitious Export Ideas was hosted by the Canberra Business Chamber and part of the ACT Chief Minister’s Export Award series. The speakers covered a wide range of sectors, from exporters of consumer products, Defence and data systems, green business solutions and advanced technology. It is wonderful to see the breadth and reach of local businesses. Proudly, the only ANU speakers were all from companies associated with RSPhys (Left to right: Jayden Castillo (Quantum Brilliance), Danial Shaddock (Liquid Instruments), and Shannon Notley (Flexegraph)). And, congratulations to Shannon on his recent iAward, Australia's longest running and most comprehensive innovation recognition program (see Australian Information Industry Association).

This Thursday at 1030, COVID permitting, we will hold a School morning tea to thank all the Heads of Departments, incoming and outgoing, in recognition of this significant School transition to five new Departments. It is also a chance to congratulate our recent graduates.  Please remember to bring your own mug.

Many thanks to all those busily managing the new teaching term. For those not yet engaged please reach out to Siobhàn Ryman, our PEC administrator, for areas you can contribute to, or contact our convenors directly. With the ongoing State shutdowns, all help will be hugely appreciated.

3MT Competition Results

The College of Science and College of Health & Medicine 3MT competition was held on Tuesday 20 July with 17 HDR candidates competing – the judges found the selection extremely difficult due to the high quality talks presented. Well done to all our candidates for your hard work.

Four RSPhys students participated in the College 3MT competition – Lorcan Conlon, Alexander Kiy, Joshua Soo and Xingshuo Huang. Joshua was the winner of the RSPhys 3MT round, and Lorcan was the Runner Up and won RSPhys People’s Choice.

All four students presented excellent, very polished talks at the College 3MT round.

2022-2025 MIT Pappalardo Fellowships in Physics Competition

The Executive Committee of the MIT Pappalardo Fellowships in Physics invites faculty and senior researchers within physics, astronomy or related fields to submit nominations for the 2022-2025 MIT Pappalardo Fellowships in Physics competition.

Nominees should be young physicists of exceptional ability at the beginning stage of their careers, who currently have or will have received a doctoral degree in physics, astronomy or related fields by September 1, 2022.

The team from Nonlinear Physics Center with collaborators from the University of Korea and ITMO University in Russia suggested and realized the first lasing metasurface operating in the so-called anapole regime, which originates from an overlap of the optical electric dipole and toroidal dipole modes. The team demonstrated room-temperature lasing with low threshold and high coherence, and the results are published in Nano Letters (Impact Factor=11.189).

Introduction to Personal Consultancies at ANU

ANU Enterprise is presenting a series of information sessions beginning with one on consultancies, on Thursday 5 August, 3-4PM.

This event is for academic staff at ANU who have little or no consultancy experience and are interested in becoming a consultant.

The event is also relevant for staff who have prior experience in 52 Day Rule consultancies. The presentation will cover how, when, and where to notify ANU of your consultancy pre-existing arrangements and information on how and where ANU Enterprise can support future consultancies.
