Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

My thanks goes out to the enormous School-wide contribution to the National Youth Science Forum this year. Over the past month close to 100 hours of high quality outreach was delivered, as showcased by Andrew Papworth below and pic above.  It’s a great effort and 35 years on we are seeing these graduates in important roles, around the world and the ANU plays prominently in their experience at NYSF.

I draw your attention to a National Meeting for Early- and Mid-Career Researchers run by the Australian Academy of Science.  The School will sponsor a number of places, so if you’re interested please look at the details below.

Expressions of Interest for the headships of Applied Mathematics and Electronic Materials Engineering have now closed. EoIs were received from Professor Adrian Sheppard (for AM) and A/Professor Patrick Kluth (for EME).  The submissions will be discussed by the School Executive  and I expect an announcement to be made for each position within a week.

Next week the VC will welcome the undergraduates to the new year at a Commencement Address.  It’s a great and colourful event, so please wander over to show our undergraduates how diverse ANU is.

All the best for the week,

Tim

NYSF - by Andrew Papworth

National Youth Science Forum - January is one of our busiest times of the year as the NYSF arrives on the campus. Our program in PEC provides an opportunity to experience experimental physics with activities that include Programming Edison Robots, Fourier Optics and Optical fibres to name but a few. The Physics Magic Show (copyright Ruvi) is always popular and the MAGLEV train never ceases to amaze! Their time finishes with a visit to OZGRAV: Impressive. Thanks go to Lachlan McGinnis, Ruvi Lecamwasam, Aqeel Akber, Mitchell de Vries, Lachlan Whichello and in week two Coffee Grounds.
