China’s launch of a quantum-enabled satellite could spark a new global space race

Prof Ping Koy Lam from the ANU’s Department of Quantum Science says aside from being a potential step towards a quantum internet, China’s satellite project is a “pioneering experiment” that will also tell us more about quantum physics and gravity.

“In physics we are trying, and we have demonstrated some encryption techniques that rely on the law of physics rather than the mathematical complexity and we call this quantum key distribution,” he told news.com.au.

Call for nominations/applications: CMBE/CPMS Excellence in Education Awards

The ANU Colleges of Science offer annual awards, citations and special commendations for excellence in education. All CMBE/CPMS staff involved in teaching or supporting learning are encouraged to apply on the basis of:

  • sustained teaching quality, including supervision or tutoring; 
  • successful innovation in any aspect of education; and/or
  • other contributions to educational excellence in teaching or learning support, at the level of course, program, School or College. 

Nominations close: Monday 19 September

RSPE Changes to Petty Cash

As part of aligning RSPE’s processes with the ANU's, from 16 September the school will discontinue petty cash in favour of the reimbursement and purchase card processes.

Changes to the University's Mail and Courier functions through DHL

Based on the positive feedback and the savings that can be achieved, UPCO have sought and obtained approval to proceed with the proposed mailroom changes. It is anticipated that the changes will take effect from 1 August 2016.
