Project details

Few-vortex dynamics are the fundamental building blocks of many-vortex processes, such as vortex turbulence.  Fundamental few-vortex dynamics in single-component superfluids include the co-rotating behaviour of pairs of co-rotating vortices and the traversal of a vortex-antivortex pair along a straight line.  While these few-vortex dynamics are well understood for a single-component superfluids, when interactions between an additional second background superfluid component are introduced, we expect these processes to be modified. This project will numerically model the coupled non-linear Schrödinger equation to understand how the dynamics of systems of few quantum-vortices are altered in the presence of a moving second superfluid component. Extensions of this project include modelling non-equilibrium many-vortex flow.
