Project details

Electric monopole (E0) transitions between nuclear states with same parity and spin are very sensitive tools to examine structural changes. While transitions between 0+ states can only proceed with E0 transitions involving conversion electrons or electron-positron pairs, E0 transitions between J>0 states will compete with more regular M1 and E2 transitions. The later ones can also proceed with gamma-ray emission. These type of transitions can be characterised as mixed E0+M1+E2 transitions. The most precise way to extract the E0 component is from the angular correlation between conversion electrons and gamma-rays.

This project is aiming to develop a new high resolution setup to measure angular correlations between conversion electrons and gamma rays and to characterise the system using radioactive sources.

This project can or will involve the design of the experimental set-up, including the custom design vacuum chamber and detector system. The initial experiments will use known radioactive sources. To interpret the observed angular correlations, Monte Carlo calculations will be used.

The project is suitable for honours and master students, interested in spectrometer development, multi-parameter data analysis and Monte Carlo modelling.
