Local machine storage
The most commonly used storage in RSPE is the hard drive in local desktops and laptops. This storage has the advantage of being fast, cheap and readily available, but it is lacking in versatility and robustness. Hard drive failures are a regular ocurance and can cause the loss of all of your data.
If you keep important data on your personal computer's hard drive you must keep it backed up. Please read our information on data backups.
RSPE linux file server
Every department is provided storage on our linux files servers. These days this storage is predominantly used by our linux computational machines. This storage is backed up, but is fairly limited in capacity.
RSPE research data file server
Please contact us if you have large data sets that you would like to store centrally for your research group.
Cloud storage is typically used to synchronize a folder from your local machine to storage in the "cloud". Files in cloud storage can sync to multiple machines and be accessed through web and mobile device interfaces.
There are several free cloud storage options available for ANU staff and students.
Cloudstor+ replaces AARNET's Cloudstor large file sending service
- Quick and secure large file transfer
- Secure storage located in Australia avoiding any sovereignty issues
- Data replicated a minimum of three times at geographically distributed storage nodes
- 100GB of storage
- Sync Capabilities for many OS’s
- Similar to services such as Dropbox in usability. Based on owncloud
- Authentication for OS sync client separate from Web client
Microsoft OneDrive for Business
- Up to 1TB of storage (will move to unlimited throughout 2015)
- Current restriction of 20,000 files for syncing
- 10GB File size limit
- Sync Capabilities for Windows only (Mac coming in late 2015)
- Stored in MS cloud and replicated over multiple countries
- OneDrive is integrated in Window 8.1 and also Office 2013 for Windows. Windows 7 and 8 require the standalone Onedrive app (part of Office 2013)
Login via webmail http://outlook.com/anu.edu.au and choose OneDrive from the app selector in the top left of the window
To install on your Windows Sync App on your Computer. Again login to webmail as above, then click on the Cog in the top right of the window -> Office 365 settings -> “software” on the left hand side -> then “OneDrive on the left hand side. Follow the instructions from there. Any usernames that you are asked for relate to your uniID@uds.anu.edu.au (eg. email@example.com)
