Visitor types

Departmental Visitor

A Departmental Visitor (DV) can be an academic or student visitor undertaking collaborative research with the department for under 4 weeks.

The following procedure should be undertaken prior to their arrival.

  1. Inform Departmental Administrator of visitor details (name, home institution, email and contact details), arrival and departure dates and financial support agreement (if any).
  2. An invitation letter is prepared  and signed by the Head of Department.
  3. The signed letter is then scanned, emailed to potential DV and copied to the Director for information.
  4. Departmental Visitors should apply for a Business Short Stay Visa for quicker process.

  6. An induction process will be undertaken on visitor arrival.
  7. Visitor reimbursement/expenses.

Visiting Fellow

A Visiting Fellow (VF) can be a domestic or international academic visitor undertaking collaborative research with the department for over 4 weeks and hold a PhD qualification.

  1. Inform Departmental Administrator of visitor details (name, home institution, email and contact details), arrival and departure dates and financial support agreement (if any).
  2. Complete the Honorary Status Nomination form and attach a curriculum vitae, a copy of the visitor’s passport and return to the Departmental Administrator.
  3. DA will forward application to the Director and other signatories.
  4. A formal offer letter is prepared and sent directly to the potential VF by Human Resources Officer including instructions for visa application
  5. Visitor will be issued a POI number to allow for access to ANU and school facilities
  6. An induction process will be undertaken on visitor arrival
  7. Visitor reimbursement/expenses

Occupational Trainee

An Occupational Trainee (OT) can be a domestic or international student who is studying toward a degree and is visiting for more than 4 weeks. This can apply for internship, visiting students.

The visiting procedure is similar to Visiting Fellow procedure. However, Occupational Trainee has to apply for an Occupational Trainee Visa. The instructions for visa application is provided in the offer letter.

Person of interest (POI)

A POI is any individual not on the ANU payroll who requires access to ANU facilities such as library or wireless network. POI registration suits long term and/or regular visitors where as afffiliate IDs are better suited to visitors under two weeks.

To obtain a POI identification number a request should be sent to the DA with a copy of the invitation letter signed by the Head of Department.
