Nonlinear Photonic Crystals for Optical Frequency Conversion
Nonlinear Photonic crystals are nonlinear optical materials that maintain a constant refractive index but exhibit spatially periodic reversal of the sign of their second-order nonlinearity. This modulation of the nonlinearity provides a mechanism enabling to synchronize phases of co-propagating electromagnetic waves such that they can efficiently exchange energy. In this way it is possible to convert optical beam with given frequency into one or more beams at different frequencies. In this talk, I will present my research progress on the design and fabrication of nonlinear photonic crystals and demonstrate their applications in broadband optical frequency conversions, nonlinear optical wave shaping and three-dimensional visualization of ferroelectric domain structures.
Dr Yan Sheng obtained her PhD degree from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Science in July 2007. Here PhD thesis was on the optical frequency conversions in two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystals. After her PhD she was awarded the Max-Planck Postdoctoral Fellowship to carry out postdoctoral research (Oct. 2007 – Feb. 2010) at Max-Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPIP), Mainz, Germany. During this period she performed experimental research on the nonlinear optical effects on the interface of nonlinear medium. In March 2010 She joined Laser Physics Centre as an ARC APD Fellow. Her research interest covers second-order nonlinear optical effects, quasi-phase matching, and advance nonlinear optical materials. Over the course of her research she has published 38 peer-reviewed journal articles and has an H-index of 12.
