The magnetic plasma confinement group experimentally verifying plasma configurations within the H-1 heliac using a range of sensing techniques in addition to simulating 'vacuum' configurations with the HELIAC and GOURDON supercomputer codes.
The plasma-surface interaction group spans novel industrial uses of plasmas for advanced device processing to material testing for fusion scale applications. The aim of this research is to create key experimental configurations and plasma conditions to investigate advanced wall material and the coupled issues of plasma performance, erosion, redeposition and impurity control.
The advanced remote sensing systems group develop plasma diagnostic and imaging systems spanning the microwave to optical regions. Applications include time-resolved tomographic reconstruction of basic plasma properties such as temperature, density and flow as well as applications outside the field of plasma science including steel production and human tissue imaging.
