Joined ANU Department of Physics, School of General Studies in January 1966. Research with R J Stalker in high speed shock wave physics using the free-piston technique developed by Stalker. Undertook development of diagnostic techniques using lasers, spectroscopy and interferometry. Designed and developed the double-diaphragm free-piston shock tube to produce shock waves at up to 60 times the speed of sound for dissociation and ionisation relaxation studies behind intense shock waves. That facility now transfered to ADFA engineering and used as a shock tunnel. Awarded a Personal Professor position in 1987. Spent 1972 visiting Harvard College Observatory researching Laboratory Astrophysics and 1989 at the Astronomy Department of ETH Zurich in similar work. That research developed into the laser spectroscopy and quantum physics research taken over by Hans Bachor on recruitment from Hannover in 1981. Retired in December 1993 as head of the Department of Physics and as an ANU Emeritus Professor. From 1994 to 2000 was chairman of the Australian Consortium for Interferometric Gravitational Wave Astronomy, funded by the Australian research Council and involving gravitational wave researchers at ANU, Monash University, the University of Adelaide and the University of Western Australia. Served as the Australian representative on the Gravitational Wave International Committee. In 1983 became the ANU representative on the National Science Summer School Council and its Chairman in 1998 until retiring from that position in 2008. In 2004 was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to education particularly the National Science Summer School Youth Forum, and in 2009 a Vocational Excellence Award from the Rotary Club of Ginninderra.
Present interests are in the physics of global warming and in convincing people of the need for sustainable housing and energy efficiency in the home. Am supporting the local architect Derek Wrigley in the design of energy efficient passive solar housing.
