Available student project - Investigating the morphology, composition, and mechanics of native grains

Research fields

  • Materials Science and Engineering

Project details

This project would involve the microCT scanning of grains as well as the application of multiple mechanical testing methods to characterise grain morphology, structure, hardness and breakage for a range of wild Australian grains under various conditions. These results will also be integrated with existing 3D compositional data.

Required background

A background in any of the following fields of research is preferred: materials physics, mechanical testing, image processing, plant biology, crop domestication.

Project suitability

This research project can be tailored to suit students of the following type(s)
  • PhB (2nd or 3rd year)
  • Honours project
  • Phd or Masters
