The ARC has released the opening dates for the following ARC schemes:

There are significant changes (including Selection Criteria) in the Funding Rules of Linkage Projects commencing in 2017.

Proposals submitted before 22 December 2016 will be under the current Funding Rules. Proposals submitted in 2017 will be under the newly released Funding Rules.

2017 Major Equipment Grants Scheme (MEC)

The 2017 Major Equipment Grants Scheme (MEC) will open in November. The MEC provides funding of up to $500,000 to support the replacement or purchase of large equipment for research.

Business research and innovation initiative – pilot programme
Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, AU

This is intended to drive innovation within SMEs and government by encouraging the development of innovative solutions by SMEs to public policy and service delivery challenges. Grants are worth up to AUD 100,000 for feasibility studies and up to AUD 1 million to develop a proof of concept addressing the same challenge.

Khwarizmi international award
Iranian Research Organization for Science and Technology, IR

This recognises outstanding scientific achievements made by researchers, innovators and inventors from all over the world.

Mpala postdoctoral fellowship
Smithsonian Institution, US

This promotes the study of biology, anthropology, geology, hydrology, material science, social science, soil science or related areas. The fellowship provides a stipend of USD 47,500 per year for a period of one to two years, and a research allowance of up to USD 4,000 for research-related expenses. Temporary relocation costs may also be provided.

Peter Buck fellowship
Smithsonian Institution, US

This enables early-career investigators to add additional time to the one-year Smithsonian Institution fellowship award. The postdoctoral fellowships provide scientists with a stipend of USD 48,000 including an additional research allowance. The predoctoral fellowships provide PhD students with a stipend of USD 32,700 also including an additional research allowance.

The Phyllis Montgomerie 2017 Commonwealth Award
The Royal Commonwealth Society

The Royal Commonwealth Society ACT Branch provides an annual award of up to $5000 to help with expenses associated with a research or education project to be conducted in a Commonwealth country, including Australia. Funding for the award is made possible by bequest to the Society by the late Mrs Phyllis Montgomerie, a lifelong advocate for social justice and a former president of the Society.

Perpetual's IMPACT Philanthropy Application Program
Perpetual, AU

Perpetual distributes more than $80 million annually to non-profit organisations on behalf of the charitable trusts and endowments that we manage. Non-profit organisations can apply for funding through our annual granting program – the IMPACT Philanthropy Application Program.

Applicants will be invited to submit full applications after the internal ranking process of EOI's due to a capped number of applications that ANU can submit.

Joint transnational call on sensing technologies
ERA-Net PhotonicSensing, EU

This aims to contribute to the fast development and implementation of photonics based sensing technologies. Funding may range from €500,000 to €4 million per project over 24 to 36 months.

Commission 17: Laser Physics and Photonics Young Scientist Prizes
International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP)

The IUPAP Commission 17 – Laser Physics and Photonics – is seeking nominations for its biennial Young Scientist Prizes. Two prizes are available for award. One prize is for outstanding contributions of a fundamental nature. The other is for outstanding contributions of an applied nature. Both prize winners will have demonstrated significant achievement, and exceptional promise for future achievement in the areas of laser physics and/or photonics. The recipients must be no more than eight years post PhD (excluding career interruptions) by the deadline for nominations.

Volvo environment prize

This recognises innovations or scientific discoveries that, in broad terms, fall within the environmental field. The prize is worth SEK 1.5 million.

Society in science – Branco Weiss fellowships
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, CH

These enable young postdoctoral researchers to work on a research topic of choice in science, engineering and social sciences. Fellowships include a grant worth CHF100,000 per year for up to five years and the opportunity to work at any academic institution of the fellow’s choice.

Isaac Newton medal

This recognises a physicist, regardless of subject area, background or nationality, for outstanding contributions to physics. The medal includes a prize of £1,000 and a certificate.

Experiment – in search of bold research ideas
VolkswagenStiftung – Volkswagen Foundation, DE

This initiative aims to support new research concepts in science, engineering, behavioural and life sciences, disregarding the project risk and perhaps the vagueness of a successful outcome. Approximately 15 exploratory projects will be granted per year, worth €100,000 each for a period of 18 months.

Horizon prize for CO2 reuse
Horizon 2020: Societal Challenges, EU

This rewards innovative products utilising CO2 that could significantly reduce the atmospheric emissions of CO2 when deployed at commercial scale. The prize is worth €1.5 million.
