Trapped ions are one of the most promising platforms for quantum computing. Current trapped ion proposals are limited by a lack of fast entangling gates for scalable architectures. I discuss the present state of trapped ion quantum computing and demonstrate how “fast-gates” can be used in scalable architectures. This brings us one step closer to scalable quantum computing by providing entangling gates with sufficient speed and fidelity.
