Final PhD Seminar: Mid-infrared Supercontinuum Generation in Chalcogenides

Ms Yu Yi (Ivy)
Laser Physics Centre

Mid-infrared (MIR) light sources are important as they have various applications in molecular fingerprint spectroscopy, microscopy, tomography etc. One of the MIR sources, MIR supercontinuum (SC) source is competitive in its convenience and simplicity to provide moderate brightness with continuous broadband coverage and ideally comparable average power to the other MIR sources. This final talk focuses on generating MIR SC in various chalcogenide platforms. I will talk about why chalcogenides are chosen and how chalcogenide waveguides and fibers are used as the nonlinear media to generate multi-octave SC spectrum in the MIR with the aid of a home-built MIR OPA system. Proof-of-principle spectroscopy demonstrations are included with the potential to rival a synchrotron over the whole functional group band and beyond.
