Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the School Community I would like to congratulate all our PhD and Honours graduates this year. I wish you all the best for your careers and I would love for you to stay in touch.

It is wonderful to see Nuclear Physics in the news as the Government starts to strengthen key National (physics-focussed) capabilities. This includes funding places in our MSc in Nuclear Science and opening five jobs across agencies (job advertisement). Please do let undergraduate and post-graduate colleagues know about these opportunities.

Further to the notice about the laser incident I'd like to draw your attention to the Intermediate Laser Safety Officer course running on 21st January. This course, designed and delivered by Dr Vincent Daria, has been approved as the mandatory ANU laser safety training module and is also offered externally to Commonwealth agencies. The usual $900 fee will be waived for all RSPhys attendees. If you are new to the School, or would like to have this new program on your training record please enrol as soon as possible as positions are limited.

And, the final picture for the year captures Dr Joshua Machacek (NPAA) showing the positron beamline to the six Australian representatives attending the International Junior Science Olympiad online exam in Canberra last week.

And, to farewell the year that was 2021, the new School website is now live. The new-look site shines a better light on our research teams, and recognises the new Department structure. My gratitude to Mr Martin Conway (School Computer Unit) and Dr Phil Dooley (our resident science journalist) for constructing and filling the site with illuminating content. Thank you both!

Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable break. See you in 2022.

Best regards,
Tim

Hazard Alert About Laser Light Projector

An ANU staff member brought personal party lights for a Christmas party on campus. This light is classified as the ‘Laser’ product. According to the Australian Standard AS/NZS IEC 60825.1:2014 the indoor laser light should be a class 1M or 2M laser product. However, this particular light is classified as class 3B, which is a regulated item as per the ANU radiation license. The laser class is clearly written on the label (yellow label below).
