Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

I hope you were able to enjoy the springtime weather this weekend. I will start this week by congratulating Professor Lilia Ferrario on her appointment as the next Director of the Mathematical Sciences Institute (MSI), seen above in her office. Lilia has been a prominent and highly regarded figure in undergraduate education for many years and is also well known for her research in Stellar Astrophysics.

Also from MSI but this time sad news with the passing of Professor Derek Robinson. Derek joined our School in 1982 and followed the newly created School of Mathematical Studies in 1989, becoming MSI in 2002. As you will see from the MSI tribute to Derek, he was highly regarded for his foundational work on Quantum Statistical Mechanics with co-author, Ole Bratteli, as well as for mentorship and contributions to the Academy of Science.

Further to the announcements of new Departments and new ANU document templates, now is a great time to update your email footer. The resources can be found here, and I draw particular attention to the suggestion that you acknowledge the traditional owners and identify your preferred personal pronouns. Both these items illustrate our desire to be inclusive and respectful, and in my view are some of the essential elements of our School community. Note, the post code has changed back to 2600.

My thanks to Prof Vince Craig for pointing out that from late last year, Australia Post now recognises traditional country in letter addresses.

Have a good week,
Tim
