Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

It was certainly a lovely weekend to be at home.

My sincere thanks to all the members of the Infrastructure Working Party for their comprehensive draft in response to the School Review and recent changes. Due to the scale of the document, and that it is term time, I will leave it open for comment until September 10th. I am very grateful to the two co-Chairs, Rachael Hanrick (MakerSpace) and Professor Hoe Tan (EME) for helping to orchestrate this collaborative process.

The ARC Excellence in Research Assessment (ERA) for 2023 is soon to commence. To make this more interesting, the Australian Bureau of Statistics updated this year the Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification scheme, which includes Fields of Research, Socio-Economic Objectives and Types of Activities codes. This means that publications after 2016 and grants won in 2019-21 will be re-coded under the new scheme. Have no fear, the talented team in the Research Services Division (RSD) have used AI to expedite the re-coding for us, but it will still need some personal assistance. The School is participating in an early release of the tool to recode existing publications and grants before a broader roll-out across the University. The RSD team have provided a helpful video and a mapping tool which is straightforward to use. Access to the tool will remain open until 23rd September.

My thanks to Professors Elena Ostrovskaya (QST) and Jodie Bradby (MP) last Friday for helping to intensify the pressure on the ARC to repeal their rule excluding preprint services like arXiv, now in its 30th year. The Guardian went to town on the topic here. Our DVC(RI), Professor Keith Nugent, has also come out publicly condemning the ARC rule, adding that no ANU applications had been affected thanks to the due diligence of our Research Office teams.

I’m always keen for an interesting picture to lead the Event Horizon. If you have an image that you’d like to share, please send it to me or Nikki.

I hope the week goes smoothly for all,
Tim
