Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

I hope you enjoyed the autumnal weather this weekend, and to usher in the seasonal change the Week’s pics show fungi flourishing in the suburbs.  Shown top are a troop of Saffron Milk caps (Lactarius deliciosus) and bottom, a cluster of Slippery Jacks (Suillus sp.), all fine images courtesy of our Distinguished Professor Yuri Kivshar.

I am grateful to the Heads of Departments who unanimously agreed to develop a “Community Chest” with the School Executive to help those who are most impacted by working remotely.  While the VC’s announcement will help many in our community the Heads will work locally to identify flexibility both in terms of opportunities, and potentially funding that can be deployed within Departments.  I call upon all senior academics to work with their Head to identify resources and tasks.  The School Executive will then work to cover situations beyond the capacity of Departments.  Now is a good time to start discussions through your supervisor with your relevant Associate Director.  See the AD Portfolio Sections below to see which AD covers your interests. School Administration and Facilities will be covered by the School Manager, James Irwin.  If you feel you have skills to offer, or are looking for a task please register with the School Exchange https://physics.anu.edu.au/intra/tasks-skills/ .

Our Communications Officer, Dr Phil Dooley, has created some banners for Parkes Way.  These will rotate each month and link directly into our website.  It’s a good time to exercise your wit and creative taglines selected for print will win a $100 gift voucher.

Finally, a reminder to all supervisors to ensure they touch base with their staff and students this week. Please ensure you have backup channels, such as each other’s phone numbers.

Have a good week,

Tim
