There have been many developments to fabricate ultrathin polymeric films, but less is known about the interaction of these films with an inorganic particles and support. I will discuss 3 different systems, where the interaction is most important for the function of the film in response to processes on the support.

1. Inserting metallic nanoparticles into a polymeric capsule shell on locally heat the shell and thus release a drug. This can be used for local drug delivery to follow cellular functions (R.Palakar, A.G.Skirtach, O.Kreft, M.Bedard, M.Garstka, K.Gould, H.M., G.B.Sukhorukov, M.Winterhalter, S.Springer, Small,5 (2009)2168 )
2.In cooperation with G. Zhang, Jilin University, a nanoplasmonic surface with a Ag film deposited is designed that is optically transparent and that can be excited by visible light. Field enhancement can lead to enhanced optical or Raman spectroscopic sensing. We introduce a new technique, skiving, to prepare 1D,2D and 3D gaps with nm precision and demonstrate their enhanced optical properties. 3.A TiO2 support excited by UV light, sonochemically treated also by visible light, ejects charge carriers, that can be converted into protons in an aqueous or polyelectrolyte environment. The resulting pH change can lead to a change in thickness and elasticity of the polymeric film. This can lead to changes in cell growth and via light this can be guided on a surface.
