A section through a folded sphere

Project details

The work will give us an overview of the basoic and physics and geometry that emerge when elastic bend-reisitent sheets are folded. What are the possible folds if the topoogy is to remain fixed (a sphere)? How does the bending energy depend on the fold type? How sticky do surfaces have to be to stabilise folds? The work relates to the phenomenon of membrane folding in vivo - a common propcess that has not been explored theoretically  in any detail yet.
