Investigation on unidirectional growth of organic single crystal by Sankaranarayanan-Ramasamy method and its characterization for scintillator device fabrication

Professor S. Kalainathan
Centre for Crystal Growth, VIT university Vellore, India

An organic single crystal of 1,3,5-Triphenylbenzene (3PB) has been grown from solution by Unidirectional Sankaranarayanan-Ramasamy (SR) method within a period of 72 days. The size of grown crystal was 30 mm diameter and 40 mm length. The solubility of 3PB material was determined in five different solvents with various temperatures and tetrahydrofuran (THF) was identified as a suitable solvent for bulk crystallization. Metastable zone width of the saturated solution was determined to optimize the growth period. Cell parameters of the grown 3PB crystal were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction, it belongs to orthorhombic crystal system. Fluorescence emission spectrum was recorded at 360 nm. Prompt and delayed fluorescence lifetime of 3PB single crystal has been calculated at 12 ns and 30 ns respectively. Thermogravimetric (TG-DTA) measurement was performed to the title compound, and it was stable up to 164 ÌŠC. Growth pattern and the surface defect were examined by the optical microscope and it reveals the regular shapes of etch pits which are in triangular shape. The wide range gamma energy responses of title crystal was investigated using the different energy sources such as 133Ba (356kV), 137Cs (662 kV), 60Co (1333kV), 22Na (511kV), and 22Na (1275kV).
