Teaching and Learning Einsteinian Physics in the Age of Gravitational Wave Astronomy

Professor David Blair
University of Western Australia

The Einstein-First project has been developing curriculum material designed to introduce children to the concepts of general relativity and quantum physics at a very early age. Our idea is that the modern ideas about space, time, gravity and light can be taught to every child from year 6 upwards. We base our curriculum on the use of models and analogies to create an exciting activity based learning environment. We have tested our ideas with children from ages 11 to 16. Our results to date tell us that students are currently aware that most of the science they learn is “old stuff”. They affirm that they are not too old to learn modern concepts and test results show excellent learning, girls benefiting more than boys, and overall results demonstrating very strong positive benefits.
