Departmental Seminar

Metamaterials and metasurfaces at microwave frequencies - Applications

Dr Nawaz Burokur
Institut d'Electronique Fondamentale, Universite Paris-Saclay and Universite Paris Ouest, France

I will talk about my activities in the microwave domain concerning the design and application of metamaterials and metasurfaces to antennas and microwave devices. My talk will also deal with the presentation of the transformation optics concept. This technique allows to control the path of electromagnetic waves by applying a variation in material parameters (permittivity, permeability and index) of the medium where the wave propagates. Several designs related to antennas and electromagnetic devices will be discussed in the microwave domain. Analytical formulations, as well as numerical and experimental results will be presented. Finally, excitation of dark mode through direct field coupling in single meta-atom based metasurface will be discussed and experimental validation at microwave frequencies will be presented.

Shah Nawaz Burokur received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Nantes (France) in 2005. His Ph.D. research works dealt with the applications of split ring resonators (SRRs) for microwave devices and antennas. He is actually an Associate Professor at the Université Paris Ouest and carries his research activities at the Institut d’Electronique Fondamentale, Université Paris Sud. His current research interests are in the areas of microwave and applications of periodic structures, complex media, metamaterials and metasurfaces, in the analysis of integrated planar and conformal circuits and antennas. He is also involved in the design of electromagnetic devices based on the powerful concept of transformation optics. He has published 5 book chapters and more than 60 papers in scientific journals and holds 1 patent on a metamaterial-based antenna.
