School Seminar Program

Quantum microscopy of elementary charges in ambient conditions, An introduction to Quantum Brilliance Pty Ltd & The Army Quantum Technology Roadmap: opportunities for ANU

Dr Marcus Doherty
Head of the Diamond Quantum Science and Technology Laboratory, Research School of Physics.

In this seminar, I will talk about my work in three different organisations.

In the first part of this talk, I will report the recent work performed by my laboratory at ANU: the first electric field imaging of a single (effective) elementary charge by a quantum microscope in ambient conditions. This is the first demonstration of a remarkable new means of imaging electrical phenomena with nanometre resolution and single charge sensitivity in conditions relevant for material phase transitions and biological and chemical processes.

The second part of this talk will provide an introduction to ANU’s quantum computing start-up: Quantum Brilliance Pty Ltd. I will introduce the company’s core technology: the diamond quantum accelerator; and the unique applications and pathway to useful quantum computing that it motivates. I will also outline the attractive employment and research collaboration opportunities offered by the company.

Finally, in the third part of this talk, I will introduce the recently launched Army Quantum Technology Roadmap and provide an insight into the highly successful inaugural Army Quantum Technology Challenge. The Roadmap communicates Army’s plan to engage with the quantum technology community and create significant opportunities, like the Challenge.
