Mid Term Review

Metrology and many-body physics with Helium BECs

Mr Jacob Ross
Laser Physics Centre, ANU

Since the first creation of Bose-Einstein condensates at the turn of the century, the field of ultracold atomic physics has proven fertile ground for advancing frequency standards, engineering large quantum states, investigating the foundations of physics, and more.

Following a short introduction, I will describe two spectroscopic methods which we exploit to constrain the fundamental theory of quantum electrodynamics and elucidate the proton radius problem.
Further, I will discuss how our unique single-atom sensitivity permits observations of many-body phenomena in contravention of established theory, and finally the opportunities afforded by the construction of a Helium optical lattice to investigate the reciprocal space of strongly correlated systems.
