Postgraduate training is a significant component of the mission of the School and there were a total of 93 PhD students, including continuing students and those completing their theses in the School in 1996. A total of ten postgraduates commenced their program, and of these, four were women. The percentage of women postgraduates has now increased slightly to 24%.
The School, in cooperation with the ANU Graduate School, ran a number of activities aimed at assisting postgraduates. In addition to a introductory seminar for the new students, a Workshop was held in June on Organising your PhD Program, and another in August was aimed at tackling concerns within a PhD course.
The Graduate Program in Physical Sciences also ran a Seminar Competition for the second successive year - The John Carver Prize for the best seminar presentation given by a student. Nine talks were given by Postgraduates from this School and The Faculties, and 55 students were in attendance. The sessions were again chaired by postgraduates. The winner in 1996 was Glenn Moy of the Department of Physics, The Faculties. The Director's Prize for the best talk on a theoretical topic was awarded to Bryon den Hertog of the Department of Theoretical Physics, and the Dean of the Graduate School's Prize for the best talk on an experimental topic was awarded to Jenny Wong-Leung of the Department of Electronic Materials Engineering.
