The LINAC (linear Accelerator) is a superconducting booster accelerator that takes ions from the 14UD and further increases their energies. These super energetic ions enable physicists to probe aspects of the nucleus that are difficult or impossible to investigate with a conventional machine. The beam loops around the hall and is ejected along one of three target lines at the end of which sit experiments and detectors. You can find out more about the physics of the nucleus at the ANU here.
